"HTTP" (Hypertext Transfer Protocol):
"HTTP" is the Internet's foundation of data
communication. Also, it is a networking protocol
for hypermedia, distributed and collaborative information
systems.
"WAP" (Wireless Application Protocol):
"WAP" is used when connecting to the Internet
over a wireless mobile device, for example the web browser on a
mobile phone. It was the first type of Internet access for mobile devices;
since then, there has been 2G, 3G etc.
"GSM" (Global System For Mobile
Communications):
European Telecommunications Standards Institute has
developed a standard set (GSM)
to describe the technologies of 2G digital cellular
networks. There are five different cell sizes in a GSM network – macro, micro, pico, femto and umbrella cells. The GSM networks operate in different frequency ranges with
most 2G operating in the 900 MHz or 1,800 MHz bands.
"3G" (3rd Generation Mobile
Telecommunications):
The term "3G" stands for "3rd
Generation Mobile Telecommunications". "3G" is
a generation of standards for mobile telecommunication and
mobile phones services, that fulfill International Mobile
Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications. The main function of this
is to allow Internet connection without the use of a modem. In addition to
this, later releases of "3G" also provide a mobile broadband which
allows the user to connect to a modem within their house.
"MMS" (Multimedia Messaging Service):
An "MMS" is used when sending a text message
that contains a piece of media; such as, a video or photograph. When sending,
the MMS messages are delivered in a completely different way from SMS. The
message is sent in a similar way to that of a MIME e-mail. The message is then
sent. If the receiver’s phone is MMS compatible, the content is then saved in a
storage sever with a HTTP front-end. If not, the message is delivered to a web
based service where it can be viewed from a normal browser.
"GPRS" (General Packet Radio Service):
"GPRS" is a mobile data service that is
packet oriented that is on the 2G and 3G cellular communication
system's GSM.
"Bluetooth":
"Bluetooth" is used when exchanging media
between wireless mobile devices over a short distance. It uses short-wavelength
radio transmissions in the ISM band from 2400–2480 MHz with high levels of
security. It was created by Ericsson in 1994 and was originally thought of as
an alternative to RS-232 data cables.
"ADSL" (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line):
"ADSL" is a type of digital subscriber line
technology that provides, over copper telephone lines, a faster data
transmission.
"Broadband" (Broadband
Internet Access):
"Broadband" is a connection to
the Internet that has a high data rate. In computer use, there is a
simple line code that transmits one type of signal using a full bandwidth. In comparison,
the dial-up Internet is the slowest and lest expensive of them all. A dial-up
connection allows you to connect to the Internet using a 56k modem and it dials
up a phone number provided by your personal IPS and connects you to the
Internet.
"VoIP" (Voice over Internet Protocol):
"VoIP" is used when transferring voice
communications over the Internet. Since the first VoIP protocol, the H.323, the
newer, less complex ones are increasingly limited to carrying existing
long-haul network traffic.
